Gilberto Gil is a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and the current Brazilian Minister of Culture. He began his career as a bossa nova musician, but began writing songs about politics and activism, soon teaming up with Caetano Veloso, a longtime collaborator and another key member of the 1960s Tropicalismo movement. Their act was highly political and deemed threatening by the military regime in Brazil, and Gil and Veloso were imprisoned and then told to leave the country. Gil returned to Bahia in 1972, continuing his musical career and working as an advocate for environmental issues and in politics.
